Dr. Peter Wood, Assistant Professor of Music
Trumpet, Music Theory

Dr. Peter Wood serves as Assistant Professor of Trumpet at the University of South Alabama, where he teaches applied trumpet, coaches brass ensembles, and teaches such courses as music theory, brass methods, brass literature, and brass pedagogy. For the 2006-2007 school year, he was awarded the Excellence in Teaching Award in the USA's College of Arts and Sciences, and his students have won high honors at the National Trumpet Competition and the International Trumpet Guild Youth Solo Competition. As a trumpeter, he has performed throughout the United States and in South Korea and Canada in a variety of solo, chamber, jazz, and orchestral settings. He recently released his first CD recording Commanding Statements: Chamber Music for Trumpet on the MSR Classics label and contributed the premiere performance of Robert Bradshaw’s Concerto for Trumpet and Piano for release on the Beauport Classical label. Wood currently performs on trumpet with the Mobile Symphony Orchestra and has also played with such groups as the Sioux City Symphony Orchestra and Brass Quintet, Bloomington Symphony, Columbus Pro Musica, Danville Symphony Orchestra, Camerata Orchestra, and the Wood Family Chamber Players. He has performed at conferences of the International Trumpet Guild (New Jersey, Massachusetts, and Banff, Alberta), the College Music Society (Puerto Rico), and the Society of Electroacoustic Music in the United States (Oregon), as well as at the Florida Electroacoustic Music Festival. He has taught master classes and performed solo recitals at colleges and universities all over the United States. He was twice selected to perform at the Sonic Arts Research Centre electroacoustic music festival in Belfast, Northern Ireland and recently returned from Seoul, South Korea, where he performed at the Nong Festival of electroacoustic music at the Korean National University of Arts. In the summer of 2009 he will serve as Tour Director for the Alabama Ambassadors of Music, a group of top band and choir students from all over the state of Alabama, on a 16-day, 7-country tour of Europe. He serves the International Trumpet Guild as editor of the Recording Reviews column for the ITG Journal.

Wood earned the Doctor of Music degree in Trumpet Performance and Literature at Indiana University-Bloomington, the Master of Music degree in Trumpet Performance at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and the Bachelor of Science in Music Education degree (Summa Cum Laude) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His principal trumpet teachers include Stephen Burns, Edmund Cord, John Aley, Ray Sasaki, Michael Tunnell, and Patrick Dessent. He lives in Mobile with his wife, hornist Jodi Graham Wood, and three children.
