Students who are interested in participation should fill out our Marching Band Interest Form .  You must be fully admitted to the University of South Alabama in order to audition.  Current USA students, high school seniors, and students transferring to USA should then schedule an audition with the Director, Mr. Ward Miller.  The Department of Music is hearing auditions for wind players throughout the 2009-2010 school year.  All students who are admitted will be awarded a scholarship.  For answers to all of your questions, visit our Frequently Asked Questions page.

OPEN POSITIONS FOR 2010-2011
The Jaguar Marching Band has the following number of positions open for the Fall 2010 season:

  • 12 Piccolos
  • 16 Clarinets
  • 10 Alto Saxophones
  • 34 Trumpets/Flugelhorns
  • 16 Mellophones
  • 21 Trombones
  • 14 Baritones/Euphoniums
  • 17 Tubas
  • 35 Battery/Front Ensemble Percussion
  • 32 Color Guard
  • 1 Feature Twirler

SCHEDULING AN AUDITION
You must be fully admitted to the University of South Alabama in order to audition.  A student may schedule an audition at any time by calling (251) 460-6136 or by e-mailing Mr. Ward Miller at rwmiller@jaguar1.usouthal.edu.  In addition, Departmental audition dates for the 2009 season are

  • November 14, 2009
  • January 23, 2010
  • February 6, 2010
  • March 27, 2010

If none of the above dates is available for your audition, you may schedule a special date and time by calling (251)-460-6136.  In addition, if three or more senior wind players at your school have been admitted to the University of South Alabama, then the Director of Athletic Bands will travel to your school to conduct the auditions there.

WIND PLAYERS
All winds must be heard by the director of the Marching Band, or another Department of Music Faculty member, to be accepted into the ensemble.  The audition is informal, and no prepared piece is required.  The performer will be asked to

  1. Perform the F, Bb, Eb, and Ab concert scales in two octaves from memory (in eighth notes at quarter note=120)
  2. Perform the chromatic scale from memory in at least two octaves (in eighth notes at quarter note=120)
  3. Sight-read a short excerpt.

PERCUSSIONISTS
Both battery and pit auditions for the will be Wednesday through Friday , August 4 through 6, 2010.  On Saturday, August 7 through Sunday, August 10, the Jag’ Drumline will hold its annual camp.  For additional information on audition requirements, including downloadable audition materials, visit the Jag Drumline page.

COLOR GUARD
Auditions for the 2010 Color Guard will take place in a multi-day event held on the USA campus Friday through Saturday, May 14-15, 2010.  Auditions are held before a panel of professional judges, and are closed to the public.  For information on audition requirements, as well as a downloadable application, visit our Color Guard page.

FEATURE TWIRLER
Finalists for the feature twirler position will be selected from a nationwide search conducted via video and resumé submissions.  All videos and applications are due postmarked by Friday, November 20, 2009.  After reviewing all submissions, select finalists will be notified and invited to the University of South Alabama campus for a live audition.  The feature twirler, if selected, will receive a full in-state tuition scholarship for the academic year, renewable yearly.  For more information, visit our Feature Twirler page.
